When I sit down to discuss a website with a client, one of the first questions I ask is "what would you like this website to do for your business?" This is usually followed by a long pause and then a "well...we've been thinking for some time that we need a site..." and the next thing they say pretty much tells me where they're at and how much help they need. If you're not able to communicate what you expect from your site when you sit down with a web consultant then that's the point depending on who you're working with that will determine how well you do online. If you don't know what you expect from your site and you're not working with an experience consultant that's able to help you outline your goals and objectives, you'll end up with a site that just lives online among the many millions of sites already online. That's why in order to make your website work for you, you'll need to develop some goals and objectives and a strategy to get you there.
Websites are not just repositories of information about your business. Yes, providing information to potential customers is part of the plan, but what else can a website do for you? What is it that you really want to accomplish by having a website? What would be your goals and objectives for your site? Do you want people to buy something from you? Are you looking for a lot of visitors so you can sell advertisements? These are the questions that you must ask yourself when embarking on creating a website for your business. By answering these questions, you will essentially be creating the goals and objectives of your site.
By defining attainable goals for your website, you will know exactly what it is you expect from your site. Now all you have to do is figure out what your strategy will be to attain these goals and that's where the real fun comes in. Your goals and objectives will drive your strategy and your strategy will drive your design, marketing and every other aspect of running your website.
Since you've set goals you will definitely need to be able to measure these goals in order to determine the success of your strategy and finding a way to measure these should come pretty easily as well. For example, 4 leads a week might be an objective that you can measure by the contacts you receive through your website via contact forms or newsletter sign-ups. Other goals that you might put in your plan is generating sales leads, increasing product and service awareness, increasing sales, etc.
Having goals and objectives set before building your site provides you with the direction you need to be successful online. Having these things you can then build a website that works for you - or if you already have one you can at least modify it now to align with your new goals.
A web site is a company resource and like any other capital equipment, you should see a return on investment, but that only comes from careful planning.
With that said, some people probably have had the good fortune of achieving success without all the planning at the beginning, however you better believe that once things were on the up and up they quickly realized that they need a plan to keep the good times rolling. Thus, if you already have a site, it's never too late to beginning the process.
