A Content Management System?

Sometimes I take for granted people's knowledge of technical things like content management systems aka cms. Since I deal with setting up these systems on a regular basis I sometimes overlook the fact that non-techs are probably not so familiar with this term unless they already own a site or have used one before.

Therefore, I thought I'd explain what a content management system is for all the folks that are thinking about getting a site but don't know exactly what a content management system is and why they would need one.

First of all, what a content management system is...is simply a system used to add, modify and delete content. That's the basics of it anyway. A content management system makes the tasks of creating and modifying content easy so that people without webmaster skill sets can create their own content and make changes without having to call on someone else to make every little change for them. This saves the site owner a lot of time not to mention money and who doesn't need to save money in these economic times.

The skills needed to use these systems are basic computer skills. Basically, if you can use a computer to surf the web and make status updates on Facebook then you have enough skills to use a content management system.

Some of the other features you get with a content managment system are calendars for your events, photo galleries for your pictures, blogs for writing content such as this and the list just goes on from there. These features mesh together nicely to create sites that are not only informative but also funcitonal and easy to update. Site visitors are able to comment on blogs, pull in rss feeds so they can keep up with activities at your company in their own little applications like outlook and share information with their friends by the click of a button.

With the way the internet seems to be moving to more of a social medium, content management systems are now key. These systems simplifies the task of updating your site so that you can keep up with the changing times and your visitors can keep up with you. Therefore, the next time your thinking of creating a site or if you already have one, you need to seriously think about taking advantage of a content mangement system...and now you know...and knowing's half the battle.

Great post! CMSs are needed everywhere! Most sites and applications are data driven and need a UI that allows everyone and not just developers to update the content. CMSs are not just for updating content, but most allows a user to update their profile information, post blogs and inquries to forums, along with tracking event.
